Joris Wijsmuller

Wijsmuller was born in 1965 in Rosmalen (Noord-Brabant).
He moved to The Hague in 1984 to attend the School for Photography and Photonics (now part of the Royal Academy of Art) and thereafter worked alternately as a photographer, carpenter, video technician and locksmith.
Joris became politically active in the Blauwe Aanslag squatters’ movement, led demonstrations in The Hague against the Centrumring and the Tramtunnel and published such newspapers in the 1990s as ‘Onze stad’ and the ‘Nieuwe Krant van Den Haag’.
Since 1998 he has been a member of The Hague Municipal Council for the Haagse Stadspartij. In 2004 the Haagse Courant named this self-made politician the city’s best Council Member and in 2011 he received the Haagse Kei (an annual prize awarded to someone for his work on behalf of the city).
Joris lives together with his partner, has 2 children, boxes at Haagse Directe, plays football at VV Marine and lives in the Rivierenbuurt.
Joris Wijsmuller became deputy mayor of The Hague for Urban Development, Public Housing, Sustainability and Culture in 2014.
