Head Real Estate & Private Markets, UBS Asset Management
Thomas Wels was appointed Head Real Estate & Private Markets (REPM), UBS Asset Management in January 2017. In this role he is responsible for the combined real estate, infrastructure and private equity asset management businesses that invest directly into real assets, unlisted funds, listed real estate securities as well as multi-manager solutions globally.
Thomas is a member of the UBS Asset Management Executive Committee and he chairs the Real Estate & Private Markets Management Committee. Thomas also chairs the REPM Real Estate Brazil Management Committee.
Thomas joined UBS Asset Management in 2005 and was Chief Operating Officer from 2010-2012 with overall responsibility for a number of business support functions. He has also headed the global Fund Services business, where he led its integration and further expansion, and was Global Head of Strategic Planning with responsibility for driving forward strategic business initiatives. From 2012-2016, Thomas was Head of Global Real Estate at UBS Asset Management, responsible for the leadership of the businesses investing in real estate.
Prior to joining the firm, he gained significant experience as a management consultant having been a Partner at McKinsey & Co and a Senior Partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants where he led their Asset Management, Insurance and Risk Management Practice.
Thomas is on the Board of Directors of Mitsubishi Corp.-UBS Realty Inc., a joint venture between UBS and Mitsubishi Corporation, and the Fund Management Company Board for the UBS / Gemdale partnership in China as well as the Board of Directors of UBS Luxemburg.
